Bulls bring it home

The grass of Larkin Oval is a little greener this week from the tears of Warren Pumas’ supporters after the Bogan Bulls clinched a 22-15 victory in the nail-biting grand final of the Western Plains Rugby Competition.

The Warren Pumas have had a stellar season in 2014. 

Celebrating their 60th anniversary, the club made it their goal to bring home a premiership in 2014. 

At the beginning of the year club management sent the call far and wide for the best and the brightest to return home for this outstanding season of footy. 

Inaugural OTML Parker Sevens on

The inaugural OTML Parker rugby sevens tournament was launched in Tabubil on Saturday 13 September, by OTML Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Nigel Parker.

The one-day tournament was sponsored by OTML and Camp Administration Limited and drew two teams each from Tabubil and Kiunga. The tournament showcased the first-ever womens rugby teams comprising of women from Tabubil and surrounding villages including secondary school students, OTML and contractor workers and dependants.

Huge crowd sees Bulls record win

The 1994 grand final reunion combined with Sponsor’s Day saw the largest crowd of the season at Larkin Oval last Saturday to cheer on the Bogan Bulls in their brutal clash with the Warren Pumas. 

Fortunately the Bulls were able to run in two tries for an early lead, because the Pumas were out for blood and launched attack after attack on the depleted home team. 

Defence was the key as the Warren boys dominated both possession and territory throughout the entire first half which ended with the Bulls clinging to their 10-0 lead.

Darling Downs chases wins after first-up draws

DARLING Downs needs to start strong against Wide Bay Friday to stay in the hunt for the Queensland School Sport Under-18 Rugby Union Championship at Downlands College.

The Downs boys played out two hard-fought draws against Met-West (12-12) and Peninsula (10-10) Thursday to be ranked third in their pool.

The home side started strong in both matches before letting their opposition claw back into the contest.

Darling Downs led 5-0 in the first half against Peninsula before letting in a try after the halftime siren.

Cats win inaugural tourney

The Tabubil Cats took out the inaugural North Fly Sevens Cup recently.

The Cats beat hosts Kiunga Team One 15-7 to win the Cup and K500 in cash prize for their efforts.

The one-day tournament played amid humid conditions in Kiunga Town earlier in the month, brought on the excitement sevens rugby attracts to the local community who turned out in numbers, said Kiunga Rugby Union secretary Oral James.

“This is a first for Kiunga town and definitely there will be more,” James said.

OTML Schoolboys qualify

The young cubs of Tabubil – the OTML Schoolboys Rugby Sevens team successfully returned from their second annual tour to the 2014 Scots College Schoolboys International Rugby Sevens Tournament held in Sydney, Australia during the first weekend of April.

The OTML schoolboys again did exceptionally well qualifying for the Plate Final for the second year running and were favourites to retain the title but this time were unable to hold out a fast finishing Canberra Grammar School 14-36 after leading at the interval.

Cats win inaugural 2014 Kiunga Easter Rugby 7s Tournament

The OTML Tabubil Cats have won the inaugural 2014 Kiunga Easter Rugby 7s Sevens tournament held in Kiunga on Saturday 19 April.

The Cats won all three pool games including a nervous semi-final game which secured them a Cup Final play-off against the home side’s top team in Kiunga One.

The lack of crowd support in hostile territory did little to dampen the spirits of mainly a development outfit that set out to win the tournament.

Despite the taxing turnaround of games with limited playing personnel, the Cats managed to utilise their experience well and maintained consistency throughout their games and secured the Cup final victory with a 15-7 score line against Kiunga One.


Kiunga to host sevens cup

KIUNGA is set to stage its inaugural North Fly sevens rugby union tournament over the Easter weekend.

The North Fly mining township of the Western province is continuing to grow in its second year of existence.

Kiunga rugby spokesman Oral Michael yesterday confirmed that the staging of the sevens tournament is a celebration of their second year as a competition.

He explained that teams within Tabubil and Kiunga will be taking part. Both townships will jointly host the event.

OTML Schoolboys lose in Scots 7s Plate Final

The OTML Cats Schoolboys rugby sevens team have returned to Tabubil after losing to Canberra Grammar School 14-36 in the Plate Final of the Scots College Rugby Sevens tournament, held on Saturday 5th April in Sydney, Australia.

A total of twelve teams competed in the fifth annual international schoolboy rugby sevens tournament hosted by the college.

Teams from around Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Singapore, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea converged onto the Scots College rugby oval to vie for the cup.

The tournament structure ensured that teams competed in four finals divisions: Shield; Bowl; Plate; and Cup.

Top Schoolboy sevens talent on show this Saturday

The Scots College will tomorrow play host to the 2014 Schoolboys Rugby Sevens Tournament, with 12 teams set to battle it out for the coveted title of 2014 Cup Champion. 

The Bellevue Hill main oval will see over 25 games of great seven-a-side action, with an exciting line up of international and Australian talent. 

Scots College Rugby 7’s Carnival

This weekend 12 students from St Teresa’s Catholic College are heading to Sydney to take part in the Scots College Schoolboy Rugby Sevens Carnival.

This invitational carnival only accepts 12 teams from around the South Pacific and features some of the best Rugby 7’s schools in the region.

St Teresa’s has drawn Westfield Sports High and Brisbane State High in their pool providing them with a challenging set of pool fixtures.

Other teams at the carnival include The Scots College, Palmerston North Boys High (NZ), OTML Schoolboys (PNG), AIS (Singapore), Canberra Grammar and the Lloyd McDermott Development Team.

Regardless of the result, this will be a fantastic experience for the St Teresa’s boys and it will no doubt benefit their Rugby 7’s campaign later in the year. Despite some key injuries, the squad features several players who were part of the St Teresa’s U16 and U18 sides who comprehensively took out the 2013 Sunshine Coast Schools 7’s Carnivals.

The Cats' social responsibilty

The Tabubil Cats have made several donations to the Tabubil community over the years, from donated goods brought back from Australian tours to cash donations to various communities within the township.

Cash Donations
The team has been an active part of the local community donating cash mainly to Haus Krais, Churches and sponsoring/assisting in fundraising efforts of other sporting codes.

Cats finish 3rd in Port Douglas 7s

The OTML Tabubil Cats rugby team returned to Tabubil early this week, finishing third in the 2014 Port Douglas Sevens tournament.

The defending champions returned to the Port Douglas Sports Complex in the hope of winning the tournament a second time and become $5,000 richer but were stop short in their tracks by Cairns team, Aspire who put an end to the Cats' winning streak.

Island Breeze coast to victory

Port Douglas Rugby Sevens tournament organisers say the annual sporting carnival has 'exceeded expectations' with a record crowd on hand over the weekend.

More than 700 spectators watched on as Townsville-based Fijian side Island Breeze won the tournament, defeating Cairns' Aspired 33-7 in the final on Saturday evening.

Defending champions, the Tabubil Cats from Papua New Guinea finished third. James Cook University Townsville won the maiden women's title beating Cairns-based Southside, 15-7. Organiser Shane Branch said both teams were deserving winners.

"They were both very, very talented football teams," he said.

Port Douglas rugby tournament on the rise

Organisers are anticipating a record crowd ahead of the annual Port Douglas Rugby Sevens tournament this Saturday.

More than 150 players representing nineteen teams will take the field with $5000 awarded to the winning senior men's team.
Now in its fourth year, organiser Adam Calcraft says the tournament's reputation continues to grow.

"We started off with just eight teams at our first tournament," he says.

"This year, most of the sides have contacted us to play in it which is a good sign."

The carnival will also feature defending champions, the Tabubil Cats direct from Papua New Guinea. Mr Calcraft says the Cats will be hard to beat again this year.

The OTML Tabubil Cats received K20,000 worth of merchandise sponsorship from Hastings Deering, Tabubil branch this month.

Hastings Deering has supported the Tabubil Cats rugby team over the years in the form of cash and merchandise.

The sponsorship this year is part of the company's annual support of the rugby code and comprised of polo shirts, training tees, bags, caps, and water bottles.

Joel Allan, of the Tabubil office presented the merchandise on behalf of Branch Manager, Phil Beinke to members of the select side during training.

"Tabubil Rugby would like to thank Mr. Beinke and his staff for their continued support towards our cause", said president and coach, Anthony Aruha.

The rugby team has two senior tours in February and a schoolboys tour in April. The timely donation will be issued to both the senior and schoolboys sides.
