The Cats beat hosts Kiunga Team One 15-7 to win the Cup and K500 in cash prize for their efforts.

The one-day tournament played amid humid conditions in Kiunga Town earlier in the month, brought on the excitement sevens rugby attracts to the local community who turned out in numbers, said Kiunga Rugby Union secretary Oral James.

“This is a first for Kiunga town and definitely there will be more,” James said.

He said the experienced Cats were too strong for their local talent.

“The inclusion of the Tabubil team is a huge bonus to the development of the code in our mining township.

“I also urge business houses to come forward and support our cause as rugby has a lot to contribute in return within and around the community as well.”

Cats manager Kelly Kesawe thanked Kiunga rugby for the invitation to play in the North Fly District tournament.
