The Downs boys played out two hard-fought draws against Met-West (12-12) and Peninsula (10-10) Thursday to be ranked third in their pool.
The home side started strong in both matches before letting their opposition claw back into the contest.
Darling Downs led 5-0 in the first half against Peninsula before letting in a try after the halftime siren.
They hit the lead again with a clever try from a short line-out throw but Peninsula was able to level the scores after a period of sustained pressure close to the line.
Darling Downs coach Andrew Skipper was happy with his side's performance but he admitted they need to finish games better.
Darling Downs will be up against Wide Bay Friday morning before taking on Sunshine Coast, with the top two teams in each pool going through to the semi-finals.
Skipper was confident the Darling Downs boys could get the job done but he said the first match against Wide Bay would be crucial.
