The 1994 grand final reunion combined with Sponsor’s Day saw the largest crowd of the season at Larkin Oval last Saturday to cheer on the Bogan Bulls in their brutal clash with the Warren Pumas.
Fortunately the Bulls were able to run in two tries for an early lead, because the Pumas were out for blood and launched attack after attack on the depleted home team.
Defence was the key as the Warren boys dominated both possession and territory throughout the entire first half which ended with the Bulls clinging to their 10-0 lead.
The second half was more of the same and Warren managed to batter their way over the line to bring the score to 10-5.
The Pumas were desperate but the Bulls held strong against 40 minutes of merciless pounding.
The final 10 minutes was a nail-biter spent metres from the Bulls’ try line with the tenacious defenders repeatedly repelling the Pumas’ onslaught.
The whistle blew and the players collapsed exhausted - the Bulls victorious at 10-5 against one of the strongest teams of recent seasons.
Reserve grade went much the same way with Richie Deebank’s team of grizzled veterans posting a 14-7 win.
The Pumas had thought they might salvage some dignity in the follow-up match but then Skimmer George and Andrew Walsh ran on to the field and all hope was lost.
The regular season is all but over. The Bulls are safely in a ‘top two’ position going into the finals where the scores are reset and the tension starts again.
This Saturday’s game is a mere showpiece, but one word says it all. Bourke. This is a grudge match.
The Bulls are safely through to the finals and the Bourke Rams are out, but rumours have reached Nyngan that their arch rivals are treating their last game as a massive all-in blowout.
Bourke can play ugly and their supporters even uglier so Nyngan will need their home crowd to balance the aesthetics on the side lines.
Kick-off is at 2pm at Larkin Oval.
Look for the Bogan Bulls on facebook and see you at the game.
