Bulls take out Pumas

By Grace Ryan, Nyngan Observer

A 29 to 18 defeat over Warren on Friday night showed the Bulls can take home a win night and day.

A strong Bulls team defeated the Pumas in style in Warren demonstrating some fantastic football at the same time.

It took the boys some warming up on the freezing cold Friday evening, but after a few plays and a giving away a couple of penalities, they seemed to find their stride.

Outside centre and team co-captain Dom Kennedy found the try line first for the Bulls and after a successful conversion by Matt Sheather morale for the home team instantly lifted.

The front row had a good game collectively with hooker Brett Moody and tight head prop Ryan Sambath both heading over the line. Sheather complimented the tries by converting both.

The half-time score was 21 to nine.

The second half saw what has been called “the best try of the season” by spectators.

As the backs carried the ball down the field; co-captain and number eight Bryan “Bubba” Perry found himself at the receiving end of a chip and chase and quickly dove for the tryline, much to the delight of the Nyngan spectators.

After the game Perry admitted that may be the quickest he’s ever moved.

A field goal by Andrew "Pickles” Nicholson gave the Bulls a little breathing space.

Despite a couple of yellow cards and a penalty try down the opposite end of the field, the Bulls were delighted by their efforts on Friday night.

Club president Bruce Cleaver has called the game a massive effort.

“It was a gutsy win by our boys,” he said.

It was a difficult decision for coaches to give out points on Friday night as it was evident everyone put in their best efforts.

Nicholson and Angus Cleaver were awarded three points, Tom Cleaver and Harry Holmes were awarded two points and Jack Kennedy was awarded one point.

In other news Duck Creek Picnic Races secretary Angela Kennedy said the rugby club were fantastic helping out at the annual event.

“Also a very special mention to our guys and wives and mums and girlfriends who worked all weekend - setting up and serving in the bar,” she said.

“We had so many helpers, it was a great club effort. And a sign of how strong and committed our club is! A really terrific team effort.”

The next three games for the Bulls are home games, the boys are taking on Walgett, Bourke and Coonamble.

The Coonamble game is not one to be missed as the Rams are the only team the Bulls have gone down to this year. It is also ladies day which is always a great day out for the ladies.
