Tabubil Cats do well in Goroka 7s

By David Kare, Sunday Chronicle

TABUBIL Rugby Football Union sent a very young rugby 7s team under the Tabubil 789 CATS to Goroka to attend the 2016 PNG SP Export Rugby 7s leg in Goroka “Tulait 7s” tournament.

The team comprised of 13 players and three officials.
According to TRFU president Kelly Kesawe the team lacked experience but lead by PNG Rugby 7s experience player Toby Yakumani Jr and captained by long time player Paul Marita the Cats were able to put a good performance.
Kesawe thanked Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) deputy CEO Musje Werror for the approval to use the company charter plane, OTML donation committee for 50% of the travel, Star Mountain Clothing Factory, TE Hardware, Cloundlands Hotel and families and friends for their great assistant.
On the first day, the team was placed in Pool D against Wabag, Goroka Reds and Goroka Sharks.

Out of three games played, Cats won two and lost one and qualified to play the cup quarter finals the next day.

On day two, the boys played in the cup quarter finals against Goroka Vikings and beat them 28-26 to advance to cup semi-final.

The cup semi final was played against Goroka Reds in a very strong encounter which saw Cats lost narrowly to Goroka Reds12-7.

“The boys had many opportunities to score and win the game but never made use of the opportunity,” said Kesawe.

“Out of 16 teams, we finished third overall and players that stood out during the two day tournament were Walter Masluk, who scored 12 tries in five games, Clinton Tubes, Toby Yakumani Junior, Paul Marita, Robson Daware and Barry Salee.

“It was a very successful tournament and our attendance was to expose and build confidence for the young boys to play in tournaments like this.”

“The team performed really well during the two day tournament on and off the field as ambassadors and representing Tabubil, North Fly and Western province as a whole.”

He confirmed that Tabubil Cats rugby is now endorsed by PNGRFU to take part in the NPC 7s tournament later this month.
