IT was the FNQ rugby heavyweight bout won on points by undefeated Northern Beaches Mud Crabs against JCU Mariners more than a month ago at Ivanhoes.
Tomorrow, it’s the much anticipated round 13 rematch with the competition frontrunners resuming their rivalry, with the hosts hellbent on avenging their round six 34-22 loss to the title favourites.
“Mud Crabs are still unbeaten this season, so obviously they continue to play good rugby,” JCU Mariners player Christian Aruha said.
“We know if we stick to what works for us, and take the game to them in the forwards, we’ll be competitive.
“The guys were disappointed with our one-point loss to Penrhyn last week, so the squad is keen to make amends.”
Standing in JCU’s way will be a Mud Crabs backline that has set the competition alight.
Joe Drahm (13), Kele Degei (11), Alex Holland (11) and Dale Ahwang (8) are among the competition’s top tryscorers, with no side able to stop their attacking potency.
“We’re definitely aware of how dangerous their backline is – we just have to find a way to make sure we can reduce each of their impacts in the match.”
Mud Crabs captain David Paniora says he knows how determined a side JCU is.
“They are strong in the forwards and they showed that in our last match,” he said.
“We just need to make sure our attitude is right on the day and take it from there.”
In other matches, third plays fourth tonight when Brothers and Southside clash at West Barlow Oval.
The game presents interesting outcomes – if the Crusaders win they take third spot. If the Brethern get the points, they extend their advantage over Sam Pao’s outfit.
Port Douglas host Barron Bulls, while Wanderers and Penrhyn travel to Innisfail in the remaining two premier grade fixtures.
