The 2011 SP Sports Awards received a total of 81 nominations and like previous years, we had to extend the closing date for nominations for another two weeks.
The Awards Selection Committee Chairperson, Emily Taule was pleased to announce that apart from Port Moresby nominations came in from as far as Kimbe, Lae, Tabubil, Oro, Wewak, Eastern Highlands & Chimbu.
Mrs. Taule said that these nominations reflect a better understanding and appreciation of the Awards from the general public.
A selection panel of five members consisting of PNGSFOC, PNGSF, Athletes Commission Rep and two other sports associates met on three occasions (26th April, 28th April and the 4th of May) to review all nominations before coming up with the list of finalists.
Finalists for each category were selected based on a selection criterion. The committee was very thorough in selections and discussions were quite intense. Mrs. Taule said 2010 had seen many outstanding performances and being a finalist was a grand achievement in itself.
Mrs. Taule also thanked SP Brewery as the major sponsor of the event and the following support sponsors; Air Niugini, The National, FM 100, EM TV, Crowne Plaza, Theodist, Grafitti Signs and City Pharmacy Limited, for supporting this prestigious sporting event in 2011.
