Climbing Mount Robinson

Since 2009, the Tabubil Cats select-side rugby team have hosted an annual climb-a-thon up the highest mountain in the Star Mountains to raise funds for their Australian tours.

To date, there have been four climbs to the top of Mount Robinson which has contributed approximately K8000 each year towards the tours. The climb-a-thon is usually held on the second week of January yearly and is used as a bonding session for players and management.

Ryan Sambath, of Enga and Jiwaka parentage, is a third-year Architecture student at the PNG University of Technology in Lae.

The 22-year-old Tabubil resident and Unitech Reds player was first selected into the Tabubil Cats representative side to the 2011 Fi-Ta Bondi Tens played in Sydney, Australia.

Sambath has since toured with the team to the 2011 NGCB Kalibobo Lighthouse Sevens and most recently, the 2013 Bondi Tens where he was named Co-Vice Captain.

A soft-spoken and humble young man, Sambath is a talented player who has leadership qualities and maturity and has a thorough knowledge of rugby union. He has been an integral of the development of rugby union in Tabubil where he is always on hand to assist as a referee and technical advisor during rugby tournaments.

Tabubil Rugby congratulates Ryan Sambath for making it into the PNG Pukpuks Team. You have made the people of Tabubil and Tabubil Rugby proud. Well done!
